On my Unix Movemail account, I have a setting to check for new mail every minute in  Account Settings -> <account> -> Server Settings.
For some reason, Thunderbird does not check it, so I have to do it manually (check for new mail).

For instance, a nightly message from logwatch comes in around 3-4am. Right now it's past noon and the message didn't show up until I clicked get mail button.
