User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.1.4pre) Gecko/20090915 Thunderbird/3.0b4 I have two SMTP servers in the list. I set the second one as the default to use. Instead, thunderbird uses the first one. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Configure more than one SMTP servers 2. Set the second one in the list as your default server for outgoing mail 3. Send a message Actual Results: Thunderbird uses the first smtp server in the list to send my message instead of the default smtp server. Expected Results: Thunderbird should use the smtp server that I had set as my default smtp server to send my message.
The SMTP server for each account or identity is set in its main tab in Tools > Account Settings. If you change it in that drop-down list (right next to Manage Identities), that specific server will be selected for outgoing messages.
If you want to use "SMTP server which is currently set as default" always, you need to select "Use default server" instead of specific SMTP server at Account Settings panel(and each additional identity's setting panel). See Bug 222388 for improvement of it.
That bug is for SeaMonkey though, which retained the old Account Wizard whereas Thunderbird has now the auto-configuration setup, selecting the servers based on the e-mail address. It doesn't provide for a "Use default server" option though in that new dialog. So, this either can be closed WFM per comment #2 or considered a request to add a default-server option to the auto-configuration panel.
Not sure what WADA is talking about. I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 and the ONLY reference to Outgoing Server in Tools > Account Settings is in Outgoing Server (SMTP), at the bottom. Each individual eMail Account only sets the Incoming Server details. There is no reference to using any specific outgoing server for each individual eMail account. Needless to say, I have this problem as well, exactly as described. I even tried bouncing Thunderbird after changing the default. I still shows up the second entry as the default output server but in practice it ignores it and selects the first entry in the list. The only way to get it to accept the default entry is to delete the non-default entry and then redefine it so it becomes the second in the list.
Well, in the meantime I noticed that the setting actuallis there, but it is not in the "server settings" panel of eachaccount, but in the (upmost level) account panel, at the bottom. Here is a drop-down list where you can select "use default SMTP server" or you can choose a certain one. Probably it would be a good idea to move this setting to the SERVER SETTINGS page...? Though it might not be strictly logical, but I would probably have expected it there... :-)
(In reply to comment #3) > or considered a request to add a default-server option to the auto-configuration panel. After resolving "old" account wizard part of Bug 222388, the "old" account wizard was removed from Tb 3. And Bug 222388 was changed to FIXED without resolving auto-config part of Bug 222388, because initial request of Bug 222388 was for the "old" account wizard part only. So Bug 222388 can be said "SeaMonkey only bug". For new auto-config part of Tb 3, Bug 529905 is opened.
Confirming. This is an annoying problem that has existed for years.
can't we dupe this to bug 529905?
