The profiles of the browser, mail-news, and other such top-level components should be separate. Then, for example, when switching browser profiles, an existing mail-news session will not be terminated.
Reproducible: Always
I use SeaMonkey only as a browser, Thunderbird for a newsgroup reader, and an old version of Eudora for E-mail. I have four distinct profiles for SeaMonkey, frequently switching between them during an hour's session.
With the installation of mail-news now mandatory with SeaMonkey 2, I would consider using that mail-news application but only if mail-news did not close down whenever I changed the browser's profile.

We have no plans on separating anything, esp. not at this intricate level - in the contrary, we're looking into improving integration of the components.
