Details
STR
1 do "Search All Messages" for something
2 click "show all as list"
Actual result
- no apparent/ and/or useful focus
- don't know what do do now
- workflow broken
Expected result
- set focus on sth. useful (either quick search box or first message in list)
-> help the user to carry on
Proposed solution:
- set focus on Quick Search box
- implement Bug 523443 (make "Subject, From, or Recipient filter" or "Entire Message filter" the default quicksearch option for search results in list mode)
-> perfect workflow for narrowing down of results list by adding further search words

Ok setting the focus on the search box while I'm browsing results doesn't seem to be too useful. I would focus on the email that was clicked. so I can easily change emails with the arrows.

Well, I just told you I'd find that VERY useful to further narrow down my results (I prefer searching over browsing results ;)). Then for you, just click on the first result message (or press tab twice) to set focus on first message. But we can do the other way round if you prefer. Then it's clicking into search bar (or ctrl+L) for me and no extra clicks for your browsing. But then, I'm the USER! *cry*

I don't understand "was clicked"? (We're looking at the virgin list right after "show all as list", before user interaction.)
> so I can easily change emails with the arrows.
That's the advantage if we set initial default focus on the first result message in the list. That's alright, just any focus would be better than none.
Having bug 423443 would be very cool, though.

Ludo, you're misunderstanding this bug, i. e. you're not even seeing it yet. This is NOT about selecting or clicking single messages, at all. Please look at the STR again. Right after "Search all messages" for something, you do NOT click on a message, but you immediately click on "Show all as list". Then you will get the list mode (with preview below), but there is no default focus (at all). In this bug, I propose the default focus in this case should be on search bar. If the user decides to view ALL messages as list (without having clicked on any of them), that may well be 50+ messages. User is not looking at a specific message, but just looking at the list (without focus). In this situation, IMO we have some reason to assume that user wants to continue with filtering out / narrow the list down to fewer messages.
You're obviously right that when user has clicked on a 5-lines-msg-preview-title in the first result tab, we'll need to have the focus on that message in the list (as we do). But that's not what this bug is about.

STR (make sure we're looking at the same thing)
1 do "Search All Messages" for something
2 click "show all as list"
-> you will see the "Welcome to Shredder" colorful thing where the msg preview is (below the list)

I accidentally opened the same bug again half a year later. The new version has more details about the proposed workflow -> forward-duplicating to bug 549970.

Typo fix: I really meant bug 523443.
