Note: this is a meta tracking bug for UI mockups and discussion of the overall user experience.

When the user clicks on a folder in the bookmarks sidebar or bookmarks menu, we should navigate the content are to display the contents of that folder.

In the case of the bookmarks toolbar, we will need to make it clear on hover that folders can either be navigated on (by clicking directly on them), or expanded to show their contents in a menu (by clicking on the small triangle to the right). On hover there should be a clear line separating the two different sections of the split button control.
alex can you clarify what this means for the bookmarks menu? is it going away or does this just not affect it's current interaction?

In 3.7 the menu bar containing the bookmarks menu will still be present on Windows XP, OS X, and Linux, and can be added back by the user on Vista and 7 (either permanently or by hitting the alt key to momentarily display it). For Vista and 7 we would like to add a control to the bookmarks toolbar that will give users access to the items that they have stored in their bookmarks menu: https://wiki.mozilla.org/images/e/e2/Fx-3.7-Direction-Phase-01.png (just realized that I forgot to file a bug on that change).

In terms of what this bug is about, if you current select a folder in the bookmarks menu and click on it (on any platform), the folder will expand but nothing else happens. The proposed change is that clicks on folder items in the bookmarks menu should navigate the browser to that folder, similar to clicking on an actual bookmark.
notes:
- for menus, toolbar items, use the same split-button scenario as in the navigable-item-in-location-bar
- for treeviews, clicking on the folder title it opens the content view
one more note: we should no longer expand to show the contents of the folder when it is directly clicked on (causing the content area to navigate to show the contents). So the only way to expand the folder is by using the expansion control.
Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
