I originally created a thread on mozillazine.org (http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1547605) but since nobody replied, I decided to bring this up to the attention of the devs.
The title of this bug report says it all: I can't seem to get the message filter to work on my newsgroups account on Tb 3b4.
I've tried setting it to ignore messages looking at the 'from' field of emails, using the 'containing' and 'is' clauses, and the spammers' email addresses in the value field. Set the desired action to 'ignore thread', also tried 'ignore sub-thread' and even 'delete message'. Each time I adjusted/changed a message filter I would restart Tb just in case but still, nothing seemed to work.
Haven't tried the filter on email accounts though.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Subscribe to a newsgroup, ideally one that is flooded often with advertising by spammers
2. Create a message filter using 'is' and 'containing' clauses set on the 'from' field of the message
3. Insert spammer's email address
4. Either:
4.1 Refresh the group (assuming it should apply filters)
4.2 Select a SPAM message and evoke 'Run Filters on Message' from the 'Tools' menu
4.3 Restart Thunderbird
Actual Results:
Nothing. Expected result, ignore threads that match a given criteria in this case, does not happen.
Expected Results:
Ignore threads that match a given criteria.

Filters are either applied to new messages being downloaded, to select messages, or to the entire folder if manually invoked. Except that the latter features, known as "filter after the fact"...

Filter after the fact does not work for news, and we've known about that for years.
