User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 Firefox/3.5.4 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.23 (20090812) Not a big deal with small attachments, but this design flaw becomes very annoying with large attachments. When you select an email with a large attachment it downloads the whole attachment before it displays the email. Then when you save the attachment, it re-downloads the file. If it already downloaded the whole email, including the attachment, the "save as" step should just save the cached copy right? Seems like you shouldn't have to sit through the download twice. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Email yourself a big file 2. Load the email 3. Save the file
Are you using pop, or imap ?
Version: unspecified → 2.0
I have this happenning on imap
Do you mind updating to 3.0rc1 to see if the issue is gone ?
Another weirdness came up: For example, I have two plaintext messages and two ones with 20mb .avi attachment each. first of all I click plaintext message - it shows as expected. should I click first message with attachment - I still see the sender and a subject, but the message itself is from previous mail. progressbar shows download progress. this is the same behaviour as I saw before, but should I click plaintext message from that moment - I see that plaintext message with video attachment, progress bar still shows download, and the attachment icon goes to that plaintext message, the actual message with attachment loses it. I click another plaintext message - everything is ok and there's no alien attachment. I click second mail with attachment - progressbar goes to zero and increases again. again I see mail header with body of the prev message, and everything is the same should I click plaintext messages one after each other. after around 10 minutes each message opens correctly and attachments are in place (both icons and files), but if I try to download any of videos, download window flashes repidly and my video player shows, wich plays first second of a video and stops (file seems to be corrupted or wasn't fuly downloaded). another 10 minutes gone by, since now messages are shown normally, after trying to open video, download window appears and downloads video. should I stop downloading, other open tries give me again first second of video. but If I restart Tb, try to open those messages in a described way (there's no another way to do that) wait till messages appear normally and attachments were in place, should I try to open the video - it's being downloaded again and shown as expected - the whole video.
I am also experiencing this double download issue in v3.0.3 (imap) Please update thunderbird not to download twice. it makes using thunderbird with attachments nearly impossible if you have bandwidth limitations. I would expect: Thunderbird to extract the email from the currently cached message. ------------------------------------------------------- I would suggest PF4Public's problem might need to be a new ticket - I also have this problem. It seems that viewing new imap messages, while thunderbird is still downloading them (but after they have appeared in the list) causes weird message display behaviour. (the one before or after appears instead, but with wrong header data) after downloaded, the messages seem to display fine. Not as critical as the first problem. I would expect: --------------- Thunderbird to display an error or warning with the ability to force a download: ie. 'new messages are being downloaded (x secs remaining)', and provide the user a button 'download this message now' This will force a download of that message (after the email I'm trying to view is downloaded, then resume the background download Or Alternatively, simply viewing the message could invoke the force download behaviour above
I'm using Windows XP, IMAP happy to setup an account on this particular IMAP server if it helps reproduce the bug
(In reply to comment #0) > Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.23 (20090812) > When you select an email with a large attachment it downloads the whole attachment before it displays the email. > Then when you save the attachment, it re-downloads the file. It's limitation/restriction of Tb2, because Tb2 uses small memory cache only for networking/downloading. It can be avoided by enabling of auto-sync of IMAP folder, but auto-sync of Tb2 is very retrictive. Tb3.0 now uses Disk Cache for downloded data of IMAP folder if auto-sync is disabled by per folder offline use=off. If auto-sync of an IMAP folder is enabled by per folder offline use=on, whole mail data is downloaded to local file known as "offline store". krs(bug opener), do you still see same problem with Tb 3.0.x? (In reply to comment #5) > I am also experiencing this double download issue in v3.0.3 (imap) As I wrote, behaviour of Tb 3.0.x depends on "offline use" seeting of IMAP folder, and your problem is different from original problem of comment #0 for Tb 2. haydnlowe@users.sourceforge.net, please open separete bug for your problem with Tb 3.0.x, with sufficient description about environment or condition(offline use=on/off etc.), with attaching IMAP log(never paste). > https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging > http://www.mozilla.org/projects/nspr/reference/html/prlog.html#25328 > SET NSPR_LOG_MODULES=timestamp,imap:5 AFAIR, there are three kind of "downloaded twice or again". - offline use=off, fetch for big attachment part to Disk Cache is requested twice in special occasion, for mail of not-so-general structure. - offline use=on, mail is partially downloaded to Disk Cache if mail is viewed before download by auto-sync, and second download is executed by auto-sync for whole mail data. - offline use=on, mails are downloaded again due to damage on offline store data or .msf data. I don't remember bug number for specific problem. Search Bugzilla.mozilla.org well via "Advanced Search" for already opened bugs before open new bug, please.

Five (5!) years later, in Thunderbird version 5.0, it is still having this most annoying bug. Mail with attachments takes forever to open, then, when you click on the attachment to open it, apparently the download starts afresh. Thunderbird has always done this, on all 4 computers in our house, in ALL IMAP accounts.
It's unbelievable that such annoying bug last for so many years. Here I'm using an up-to-date TB 7.0.1 on Windows XP, connecting to my UW IMAPd server, and that's what happened a few minutes ago: 1. Open "Look at this video" email from a friend 2. Five minutes later... ops... email has a 20MB video attachment so TB is trying to download it because "show attachments inline" is enabled (though it cannot "show" it because AFAIK it can't show videos inline on my computer) 3. Stop the download, uncheck "show attachments inline" and try again. Ops... TB still download the entire message. Wait 10+ minutes for it to complete... Notice that while it is downloading, the message window is completly blank so you take a look at the email text only after the download finish. You can't even tell if the video is worth the download because you can't read the email yet. *sigh* (NB: If I just click on "show attachments inline" after the video is downloaded, TB starts to download the email AGAIN. Also, if I close the message window and "show attachments inline" is enabled, no matter how many times I open the message, TB downloads it entirely AGAIN.) 4. Right-click "video.wmv" on the attachment list. Click "Open". Then wait 10+ minutes for the email/attachment be downloaded AGAIN. 5. 10+ minutes later, open dialog appears. "Open with" is checked, and my default video player is selected. Click "OK" 6. Download window appears showing the attachment being downloaded AGAIN. After the download finish, video player finally opens with attached video. I find hard to believe that nobody can reproduce this. It happens to me on every TB install I use, on several computers, even on Linux.
One and a half year after my last comment, jumped version from TB 7 to TB 17, and the bug is STILL present. Can anyone on earth explain me why this issue is tagged as RESOLVED?
For me the bug was resolved, in that, when I now click on a mail with an attachment it opens a little slower, but I don't have to wait for the full download for the text of the mail to become visible. The attachment only downloads when I click on it. Videos are downloaded, then shown and can afterwards be saved immediately, without repeated download.
