If I have a virtual folder on an RSS or nntp folder, then open a message from that virtual in a separate tab, the new message viewing tab does not have any action buttons in the header area, and action buttons (such as "Forward" and "Tag") on the toolbar are disabled.

I've tried creating a virtual folder on my RSS account. I succeded but the folder ended up being empty, whilst the search gave plenty of results. I spotted the following in the console :
Error: tipElement.ownerDocument is null
Source File: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindow.js
Line: 599
Can you elaborate a bit on how you created your virtual folder in the first place ?

I've never had any problems creating them - though in another bug I mention that sometimes they are a little flakey to appear. Perhaps you are seeing that, which I thought was just a new flag issue.
But to answer your question, I create virtual folders by right clicking on the folder, selecting Search ..., entering a search criteria and saving it as a virtual folder.

That what I did and didn't notice your issue. Do you also have the issue in safe-mode ?
