Description

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2b2) Gecko/20091108 Firefox/3.6b2 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2b2) Gecko/20091108 Firefox/3.6b2 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)

The problem, I believe is when Firefox tries to show the new type of ads that wsj.com started to use for the last 10 days (before everything worked fine).
The same problem happens when opening an article from theatlantic.com
For example,
http://business.theatlantic.com/2009/11/jeffrey_sachs_on_obamas_inadequacy.php

These ads have a special feature "rollover to discover" which expands the ad and changes it once the mouse rolls over them.

The problem is extremely annoying I guess for all the Firefox readers of these two periodicals (and perhaps of other sites).
The only current solution to read them is through Explorer :-(

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.log on wsj.com
2.click on any article
3.the page will open fine until the add on the right is loaded at which moment the Firefox closes itself automatically
Actual Results:
Firefox closes down completely.

Expected Results:
Should open the page normally and continue to work

PS: the problem existed with Forefox 3.0 and 3.5, and persisted even if all the extensions were blocked.
I also updated all the media s/w I have to the latest versions available: nothing helped.
Getz: I am not able to repro this using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2b3pre) Gecko/20091112 Namoroka/3.6b3pre. Can you type about:crashes in the URL bar and paste the report ID? Also I think the content changes frequently enough on the jeffrey sach site that I did not always see the rollover ad.

To comment #1 from Matti.
Thanks for your suggestion. I tried already before to obtain "about:crashes" but non is available. My Firefox does not seem to crash: it just closes down automatically with a message from Windows. Once I click on Windows message it expands giving 15 lines explanations on DEP, Data Execution Prevention.

I also tried to produce the crash report manually using WinDbg, but my Vista does not have such a file/directory name.

What's next?

To comment #2 from Marcia.
Thanks. See my reply to Matti on "about:crashes"
Regarding the jeffrey sach site you maybe right. I put it to show that it's not just wsj.com site problem but happened to me on other sites too. However on wsj.com it happens every time with every article I try to open.
So, the best way to see these ads is to go to wsj.com and click on any article.

eh? our page explains how to install windbg, you're supposed to follow the link to:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_with_WinDbg

the bit about hangs is for the case where you have a hang and need to understand how to adapt the stack trace instructions for hangs... perhaps not the best page organization, but surely not so bad that the instructions can't be followed.

I've just run WinDbg however no file with the name c:\firefox-debug-(today's date).txt has been produced. Hence, I'll copy/paste what I do see on the Win Dbg screen below. I hope it helps. (after experiencing the above problem with Firefox 3 and 3.5, I 've downloaded the latest 3.6 but it still closes down when opening any article on wsj.com, some on espn.com and some on theatlantic.com)

The problem disappeared after:
- I installed avast! antivirus (who found a ad-ware gen virus or smthng of the kind)
- I upgraded vista to windows 7

Unfortunately I can't say what one of these too solved the problem with wsj.com which doesn't close firefox anymore (all the while showing the rollover ads that I thought are the problem)
