Cut and pasted from bug 526057:

In order to help me debug why sphinx isn't working on production we
should allow access to port 3307 (or whatever the configured port is) from
outside hosts to the sphinx box.

This port is listed in the sphinx.conf

    listen    = localhost:3307:mysql41

It creates a pseudo mysql interface that lets you run queries against sphinx.

Also note, if this needs to be configurable in localsettings.py - let me know
and I can configure it, I know you've got a few searchd heads running on sphinx
production, so this could be useful.
