User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) When I close the browser, I can still see the process "firefox.exe" in my task manager consuming much of my cpu and memory resources. Reproducible: Always Expected Results: It should automatically end the process "firefox.exe" after closing the browser.
Does this happen in the Firefox safemode ? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
When I press the "x" in the top right corner, Firefox closes but the firefox.exe process is still running and consuming CPU usage. When I decide to go back onto Firefox, I have to kill the firefox.exe process manually through command prompt before it opens again. After doing this and Firefox opens again, it ALWAYS asks to restore my previous session and that Firefox has updated to 3.5.7. This bug only occurs when Firefox has been opened and closed once. I am running Windows XP Professional SP3.
This same issue happens on WindowsXP Service Pack 3 x84
Do you happen to have ghostery or other extensions installed? Try safe mode as matti suggested.

This issue has returned for Firefox 21.0 on Windows 7 64bit. Closing the browser using the X on the top right hand corner does not clean up processes. Task Manager must be opened to 'Kill Process' for 2 to 3 'firefox.exe *32' before Firefox can be opened again for re-use. Becoming a nuisance at this stage - I have returned to Internet Explorer 9 for now... Out of sheer desperation.
