User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5

I just installed a fresh Windows 7 with a fresh Firefox 3.5.5 and started a completely clean profile.

The option "open new windows in a new tab instead" in Tools=>Options=>Tabs is no longer honoured. Whether it is on or off, new windows pop up all the time when I click a link with a javascript "window.open()" call.

In previous versions, those kinds of clicks were diverted to a new tab. I would like to have this functionality back please.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set "open new windows in a new tab instead" to checked.
2. Click a link with a JavaScript 'window.open()'.

Actual Results:
New window opens, usually without a menu bar, without a location bar and without a tab bar.

Expected Results:
New tab opens within the same window.
If the window is has a height or width set or has any elements of the chrome (navigation bar etc...) removed the window is treated as a stand alone window.

It helped me, thanks, but it doesn't help most users. The option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" is quite unambiguously named but does not do what it says. This needs to change.
The links did not help me. Is there a way to configure FF3.6 which retains earlier functionality of "Open new windows in a new tab instead". If not, then this is a bug.
I concur with jgs - it's a bug IMHO.

Forgot to say - OS is Windows 2000 Advanced Server, this behaviour began after downloading a recent update - mid-December? I can't tell you the Firefox version as my installation doesn't appear to have a Help, About menu item or equivalent.

Well, version was 3.5.6 (I eventually found it). I decided to attempt a re-installation (fresh download, re-install over the top), and this seems to have cured this and a few other problems. I am not so certain that this is the bug I thought it was, but maybe an issue with a partial or bad update?

Reporter, are you still seeing this issue with Firefox 4.0.1 or later in safe mode or a fresh profile? If not, please close. These links can help you in your testing.

Version: unspecified → 3.5 Branch
I still see this in Firefox 4.0.1. However, it appears to be intended behavior per the default values of the browser.link.open_newwindow and browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction preferences:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.link.open_newwindow
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction

Thus confirming. You might wontfix this bug, if the behavior is really intended. But it certainly is unexpected, since the user-accessible preference in the Preferences dialog makes it seem as though the preference will take effect for all new windows, whereas in fact it only takes effect for some of them.

Summary: "Open new windows in a new tab instead" no longer honored → "Open new windows in a new tab instead" no longer honored for window.open with explicit height or width
Whiteboard: [CLOSEME 2011-05-30]
Version: 3.5 Branch → unspecified
I just installed 23.0a2 and can reproduce this issue on linux using a fresh profile.

When I call window.open without options a new tab is opened - as expected.
When I call window.open with 'width=1200,height=1024,resizable=1,scrollbars=1' a new window is opened even though "open new windows in a new tab instead" is checked.

I never had this issue with a stable version of Firefox. Never tried it with another aurora release.
If it is per comment 9, it's on All.
OS: Windows 7 → All

Issue still occurs on Firefox Nightly 96.0a1 (2021-11-05), beta 95.0b3 or release 94.0.1 on Windows 10.
Setting a severity of S3.

Severity: major → S3

It seems that this issue still appears with Mastodon on Firefox 106.0.3 (64-bit) on Fedora Linux with GNOME Wayland.
