Does it disappear when you hover over the taskbar, as described in Bug 527103, or does it never come back after it disappears? Bug 492902 looks like it could also be the same issue if a re-install of Firefox is the only way to fix.
If you delete the shortcut on the desktop and remove it from the recycle bin then the shortcut icon on the taskbar disappears. If you keep the shortcut icon on the desktop the icon remains.
Reporter -> Are you still experiencing this issue? Did you pin the shortcut to the task area, or did you pin Firefox? You may want to pin the item in the Mozilla folder in the start menu, rather than the icon on the desktop.
