User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5
Build Identifier: Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23 (20090812)
While trying to delete IMAP folder i'm getting the following message:
"The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: RENAME creation of child mailbox under Trash is not allowed."
There's no problems with creation of IMAP folders, but then I have to use some other mail clinets to delete it (works in Windows Live Mail and in Lotus, as well).
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a folder.
2. Try to delete it.
3. Confirm that You're sure
4. see the 'error message'.
Actual Results:
See the screenshot
Expected Results:
The software should delete the folder without problems, like other mail clinets (which suck btw) do.
Thinderbird is awesome!

Does your IMAP server permit creation of subfolder under Trash?
Can you create subfolder under Trash manually?
If you use "move to trash" as IMAP delete model, and when "Tras" is used as trash folder for Tb, Tb requests "rename XXX Trash/XXX" to IMAP server. It's equivallent to "move operation of root-level XXX to XXX under Trash".
You probably need to do one of next.
(a) Use "marks as deleted" or "remove immediately" as IMAP delete model.
(b) Use other than "Trash" as trash folder in which subfolder can be created.

Hi Guys,
thanks for the help. I'm not a super brain, but if I use other email clients it works so it must be Thunderbird (same server, same operation). Thunderbird 3 has the same problem - it's not a big deal, I can always use some other client to delete IMAP folder, but I want Thunderbird to be perfect.

yeah but we need to figure out what is broken in Thunderbird, that's why wada is asking you questions, try to answer them so we can fix Thunderbird.

Does your server support having a folder that contains both messages and sub-folders? E.g., can you have a folder "test" with messages, and have a sub-folder of "test"? If not, then you need to tell us this, in tools | account settings | server settings, click the advanced button, and uncheck the box that says this server supports folders with both messages and sub-folders...

In my case the error message is:
The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Can't create
mailbox node /home/<username>/Trash/: File exists
If I switch to "Mark as deleted" it works, instead. However, It's not clear to
me if the folder has actually been deleted or not. Moreover, using "mark as
deleted" when deleting e-mails, I suppose my deleted e-mails are no longer
moved to the Trash folder, but rather are "marked" as deleted, arent' they? Are
they ever physically deleted from the server?
Please note that I do can create subfolders in my IMAP account, but I have to
use a trailing slash when I create parent folders. For example, if I create the
folder "test1", I cannot create a subfolder "test2" under "test1". However, if
I create the folder "test1/" (with a trailing slash - TB shows it in grey),
then I can create "test2" under "test1".

Mauro, then you should uncheck that box that I described earlier. It sounds like test1 can't have messages in it.
If you uncheck that box, deleting a folder won't try to rename it under the trash. It will simply delete it.

Ok, this does the trick, thanks! I unchecked that option and reverted back to "move to Trash folder" as the deletion method and now I can delete folders.
So, in my opinion the "bug" is that Thunderbird should at least try to suggest this thing to the user, otherwise "by default" an error message is given and the user does not know what's wrong.
The best thing would be if TB could autodetect if the server can support folders with both messages and subfolders...

can you reproduce this using a current version of thunderbird?
if you are unable to reproduce, please close by setting stats to resolved, and resolution to WORKSFORME or another appropriate setting.
If you are able to reproduce, add new details, and a testcase if one does not already exist in the bug report.
