(Whiteboard: [223 Migration])

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; fr; rv:1.9.2b4) Gecko/20091124 Firefox/3.6b4
Build Identifier:

I had thunderbird 2.0.0.23 installed on my machine, running properly.
I installed 3.0 RC1, but note that I chose a different path for install, thinking to keep the 2 versions in parallel.
In 2.0,I had 2 account setup, for the same provider (free.fr).
In 3.0RC1, I was able to receive mail without doing anything, it trasnferred the pop settings properly.
To send an email, it didn't work.
In smtp settings there was a tick in the checkbox "use a username and password" in security and authentication area. This is not required by my provider, and I had to uncheck it to be able to get my mail out.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Actual Results:
Error message telling me security authentication was set, and that my smtp server didn't accept it. Goos message by the way, clear and right on the spot.
I unchecked the box, and then was able to send mail
Was that box checked already when using Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 before?

If yes, that's bug 524868. TB 2.0 and earlier silently ignored set username and password if the server didn't request it, it's now considered an error in 3.0.
I admit I can't tell how it was. I just know I was able to send email with 2.0.0.23....
I don't have a spare machine to try to reproduce it.
If you think it is worth I try to reproduce it and investigate, let me know, but I will not be able to work on that before 1 week.
Whiteboard: [223 Migration]
Since you do no longer have the original 2.0 profile, trying to reproduce it with migrating a new profile would be of limited value. It is already known that the old account wizard set up accounts enforcing user name and password for outgoing messages (bug 535033), thus prompting the problem after migrating the profile to 3.0. There is another report on free.fr (bug 537734), thus let's see if further information is coming in on that report, but it appears to be a duplicate as suggested in comment #1.

no action so far in that bug

got duped to bug 522633, which is marked blocking TB3.1

That bug doesn't apply to Thunderbird 3.0.x anyway as it has been replaced by the new account setup, which however doesn't seem to verify non-authentication during setup either.

Yes, that bug collects all those migration cases now, thus duping this one too.
