User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: Mozilla thundebird 3 rc2 After an installation of TBD3rc2 I have configured a user-account. this one is on a server and has imap mail-accounts. The mail smtp don't use at this moment the authentification (SMTP-AUTH) After it he found my mail account of the server, he read my mails, no problem. But the sending has failed. It told me that it failed because of the smtp authentification. The server has no authentification. That I chose the authentification (it's not true!), and I have just to uncheck the box "use a name and password" for this server. It is already done. The tbd 2 do it very well Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.server & client dont use SMTP-AUTH 2.prepare a mail 3.and just send it Actual Results: the message that comes is in french because of the language version of thunderbird: "L'envoi du message a échoué. Une erreur est survenue lors de l'Äenvoidu courrier: impossible de s'authentifier auprès du serveur SMTP <<192.168.0.10>>. Le serveur ne gère pas l'authentification (SMTP-AUTH) mais vous avez choisi d'utiliser l'authentification. Décochez la case <<Utiliser un nom et un mot de passe>> pour ce serveur ou contactez votre fournisseur d'accés internet. Then naturally nothing more, the mail hasn't been sent Expected Results: send the mail without bringing an error the rc 01 has this bug too but naturally the version 2.xx not

After a short time i found this website: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Cannot_send_mail And I've tried all to solve the issue. that's not the firewall which make troubles But by many tests with the "Tools -> Account Settings -> Outgoing Server (SMTP)" I've unchecked the "use of username and password" and it works! It is disconcerting, because the thunderbird v2 needed always this!!! I let it as unconfirmed, because I would like some short explanations, maybe there is anyway a minor-bug too... Thanks for understanding

mail sending of thunderbird v3rc2 works if smtp outdoing with username and password is NOT checked
Your 2.0 profile had the "user name and password" box checked, thus this option was migrated to the 3.0 version. However, that specific case is now considered an error, where the behavior indeed could be more friendly that showing a message box and not doing anything at all. This is already handled in a different bug, thus I'm duping yours against it.

allright... I've just looked after bugs for thunderbird, and not seamonkey... It's a little bit difficult to find a similar bugs-entry before to send one. Thank you for your post
That bug actually started out as a SeaMonkey bug and was moved into the MailNews Core category, which catches such backend issues.
I have this same problem currently. I have dechecked using passwords and mail worked. However today. I try to send mail and same error message pops up: Sending of message failed. An error occurred sending mail: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server smtp.west.cox.net. It does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Uncheck 'Use name and password' for that server or contact your service provider. Also each time I open Thunderbird it now wants me to enter all my passwords for all my email addresses over and over. I never had to do this. It gets stuck in loop and I enter the info over and over AND I check the box to have password manager to remember for me. Where does one go to resolve the problem?
