Sometimes when I close a tab, the site disappears from the toolbar, the tab stays open but now says "(Untitled)," and I am no longer able to close tabs in that window

The summary says it all; this is a very bizarre problem, and here's a picture to show what happens
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2443/78111812.jpg
Take note of the fact that no tab is highlighted.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.open an array of tabs
2.try to close one of the tabs

Actual Results:
the tab will stay open, the tab's title will now say "(Untitled)," you will no longer be able to close tabs in that window, and the site contained in that tab will remain open

Expected Results:
the tab should close normally

I've never seen this problem in all of my years as a Firefox user, and it seems to be directly caused by my update to the most recent build
I took a picture of how the window looks after the bug occurs; here's the URL

Take note of the fact that no tab is highlighted!!

Reporter, do you have the tab mix plus extension installed on your box? It sounds like you see something similar to bug 529403.
Whiteboard: [closeme 2009-12-22]
I don't have any extensions installed; in regard to bug 529403, the error that I encounter has even occurred with as few as two tabs open.
Do you see any error listed in the Error Console which can be found under the tools menu after the described behavior occured?
Error: Permission denied for <http://todaypage.mail.aol.com> to call method Location.toString on <http://webmail.aol.com>.
This came up in the Error Console.
That's not related to that problem. are you able to reproduce it reliable? If yes please try with a fresh profile 9http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles).
Marking dupe of bug 535895 because the report says this is the same issue with more info.

Unduping from bug 535895 because that has several issues mixed.

We would need steps how to reproduce this problem. Further (as already said) try to run Firefox with a fresh profile.

I posted a new bug containing reproducible steps and I tried it in a new profile. If you search for bugs related to aol.com, you'll notice that my bug probably occurs in direct relation to use of aol.com.
Bug 535895
Are those tabs opened via javascript? Can you retest without having javascript enabled?

@ xzha140@hotmail.com: On which page do you see the mentioned issue? Would be great to have a public accessible page for testing.
The error does not occur if I have java disabled
You mean Javascript, right? It would be great to have a snippet of the aol web page itself which shows the list of emails and especially the part how a new tab gets opened. Can you highlight those lines and use the "View Selection Source" entry from the page's context menu?
I meant javascript, yes.
Here's the line of code that I think relates to AOL mail.
<script type="text/javascript">stcStartIdx=1</script>
<ul id="sTbs" class="sTbsC">
    <li id="stli0">
    <a id="sTb_0" title="AOL Mail" name="om_stb0_supertabmail" class=" stbicn1" href="http://webmail.aol.com/" onmouseover="sprTb.cb=null;openSprTbTmd('mail','0','noExpand=0&superTabs=1&nonCustomize=true&customizeShortName=&adSpotInc=adSpot&tabIndex=0&tab=mail&.');cb(event);return false">AOL <b class="mlCnt">1</b></a></li><li id="stli1">

If I put my mouse over an email link, here's the url

it could happen at anytime at any site, i don't think this problem was caused by any particular site, and i wasn't using any tab extensions. the symptom was that when you close a tab, it goes aways and then a blank untitled tab shows up taking the position of that closed tab. i have experience with this kind of behavior in ff3.5.5 almost everyday.

It works for me. Please update if you are able to still reproduce with the latest nightly build ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

Sorry for the delay; the bug still occurs with the new build
It happens in a new profile then?

Version: 3.5 Branch → 3.6 Branch
I receive this error in the latest trunk build (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.3a6pre) Gecko/20100619 Minefield/3.7a6pre).

I cannot find STR however I currently have two tabs open, and no matter what I do, I cannot close either of them. When I open new tabs and have more than two open, I can close any number however as soon as there are two left, they cannot be closed again.

If it helps, I have browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab set to false...
possibly Bug 555875 - Un closable tabs are generated if i Close tabs by using middle button or click close button
