In psychology experiments, the standard methodology is to tell the user you're measuring one thing, but really measure something else. (So they don't get self-conscious and change their behavior about the thing they're trying to measure.) So maybe if we're looking at tabs, say, we shouldn't tell anybody that until the experiment is done, lest they change their tab use behavior knowing someone is watching.
