Are you able to open Firefox in safe mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
How about if you try and run Firefox as an administrator? (Right click on Firefox in start menu and choose "Run as Administrator")

I found a post in a google picasa forum on how to disable the feature I thought caused the problem. The feature is a continuous background scan of all faces in photos I have uploaded. They are then put in thumbnails. I think it is a useless feature. Norton Internet Security 2010 was also running a background scan at the same time. I disabled the feature, and I restarted my computer. Problem solved. I could open Firefox. Since my computer is only 1.5 years old and came with Vista; it has adequate resources.
