User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_5_8; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.3 Safari/531.9 Build Identifier: http://www.mozillamessaging.com/thunderbird/download/?product=thunderbird-3.0&os=osx&lang=en-US I have transferred my drive to a bigger one (internal drive on a MacBookPro). This was two days ago. Ever since, I have repeated errors of two types. The first type says that another copy is running. So I try to delete all the .parentlock files everywhere. This makes things work for one session. At the next session it happens again, or worse, TB3.0 crashes at start-up and the crash reporter crashes too! Two days and it still does it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Relaunch TB 2. 3. I have not been able to use my mail for the last two days, ever since upgrading to 3. I am forced to go back to Eudora v6.2! or switch to Apple Mail.
do you have news accounts defined in your profile? what happens if you start in safe mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

One more thin you could do is just reinstall TB3 - you won't loose any data as the data is in your profile. Anything in Apple's crash reporting tool ? or in /Applications/Utilities/console.app ?
First Thanks for the help. I have tried to move my profile folder out of the way. After deleting the various .parentlock files everywhere, I can launch TB and it goes to the routine of creating a new profile. If I complete it, then quit, then in the Finder swap the profile folders (I also change the name of my profile to the name newly created, so that it is recongnized as default), all hell breaks loose again. So, I guess there is no need to test the safe mode. And I wonder if my profile is damaged. In any case, how should I proceed (with a back-up of my profile folder) to try again in a different way? Thanks. Alain
Alain - try safe-mode as this will not load extensions and themes, which could be the reason for your issue.

Thanks Ludovic But I am not going to keep on running in safe mode. So what is the problem according to you? Most important, what should I do so this does not recur? Alain
(In reply to comment #5) > Thanks Ludovic > > But I am not going to keep on running in safe mode. Well you'd need to try first - that would be a good indication for us that are not seeing the crash on what might be going on. > So what is the problem according to you? Most important, what should I do so > this does not recur? With the information I have - for now I have no clue. See above on what you can od to give us a few more clues.
Hello Ludovic. OK, I restarted in safe mode and without my own start-up items. The result is the same. With no TB folder (having renamed my own Thunderbird.old), TB goes into the routine of creating a new account, etc. As soon as I rename my Thunderbird folder to plain Thunderbird, TB crashes at start-up and the crash reporter does too. I found plenty of crash reports in my TB folder, which had not been sent. So maybe at this point, what I would really like to do is get my mailboxes back. How? Thanks, ALain
Any ideas on how to get my mailboxes back?
Hum you need to move things around in your profile to figure what is crashing. Use http://kb.mozillazine.org/Category:Profile_contents_%28Thunderbird%29 as a guide on what to move out and see how things can get fixed. This is probably going to be lengthy. sorry.
Do you know where thw Account configurations are stored. I would appreciate avoiding to renter all my account servers and SMTP servers all over again. I think I may be able to locate which files give a problem.

Thanks. Sorry but I did not think the preferences included the accounts info! As of today, I have a functionning TB (I may have lost a few messages, but I still have them in Eudora). But I was unable to pipoint what file caused this mess. So I will close this report amark it as resolved. Again, a big thanks to Ludovic for his help.

OK. Let me say I finally managed to have a working TB on my new drive. What is clear is that there are circumstances where TB crashes at launch and the crash reporter does also. But I could not figure out what was causing it. I spend more than two days to figure out how to get out of my problem, but was not able to find what caused it, except that it started with the .parentlock files causing TB to refuse to start (but without crashing). Then it got worse. So for me it is resolved, but I guess you are right that it is not fixed. But how to fix it if we do not know what causes it? I do not know what qualifier to use. Thanks. Alain
