User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) "Scott Nilsson" <scottnilsson@gmail.com> Operating Firefox 3.5.5 on a Dell XPS630/Vista 64-bit, no prior problems. Repeated update attempts to Firefox 3.6 all fail, same error: 'the license could not be found' - instructed to visit FF/Moz home page for info, no info or ref found. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Automatic update fails to same error message. Firefox 3.5.5 resumes. 2. Manual update fails to same error message. Firefox 3.5.5 resumes. Actual Results: Auto: follow FF install inst to allow auto-update, followed by a very, VERY long delay with a grayed-out/locked-out screen. If I go to WinVis Task Manager and then 'Cancel' to resume, it clears the grayed-out/locked-out state and allows resumed functions - following additional delay, receive the update failure message. Expected Results: Loaded FF 3.6 and resumed normal functions (I have never had an automatic or manual FF update fail in five years). Love Firefox, look forward to fix. Thank you all, and Happy Holidays!

OK, so you were trying to update from firefox 3.5.5 to 3.5.6, or from 3.5.5 to 3.6 beta?

We haven't enabled a 3.5.x to 3.6<anything> on a public facing update channel, so this is rather confusing.

I have a similar problem. The update process fails every time. I have Mozila 3.6 and the update to 3.6.2 fails every time.
Related to/duplicate of Firefox bug 508559?

(In reply to comment #5) > Related to/duplicate of Firefox bug 508559? Possibly but since the root cause of the UI getting into this bad state is not known it is impossible to tell. There have also been numerous fixes that have landed since that bug that will make it less likely for bugs like this to occur as well as easier to diagnose.

I've the same problems here - both with Mozilla (3.6) and Thunderbird (3.0) (both 32 Bits build) under Windows 7/64 Bits. The whole update process is not working, simply due to a not findable license file - then abort the update process, but of course, the installed Firefox or Thunderbird sometimes recognize, that there is a new update and download it again and updater fails again and the whole story repeats ....

Marten, please file a new bug under toolkit -> application update for your issue.
I FINALLY FOUND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. MY COMPUTER WAS INFECTED BY SOME ROOT-KIT VIRUSES THAT PREVENTED FIREFOX TO UPDATE. I CHANGED MY ANTIVIRUS TO ANOTHER MODERN ONE THAT DETECTS ROOT KITS, I RUN A FULL SCAN, I REMOVED ALL DETECTED THREATS AND ... VOILA ... PROBLEM WAS SOLVED !!!

Lorien, do you have a list of the what it fixed? It could help us when diagnosing if we could identify the one that caused this on your system.

First of all, it fixed the " Firefox 3.6 update fails -'license could not be found'" problem. It also fixed some "strange" stucks of firefox.
