I am in fact able to add a new bookmark, but only by including it in one of those five folders and then afterwards manually moving it to the folder in which I wanted to include it in the first place.
Reproducible: Always

Have you tried opening the foloder selector through the down arrow button that is on the right side of the control you are actually using?

Thank you for thinking along. Yes I have, but all I get to see are my last five folders in reverse order as mentioned above.

Can you attach a screenshot of what you are seeing?
Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

Thank you Tim, but while looking at it again this morning I found the solution: next to a window there is a very small arrow which I had not recognized as such (I'm new to Windows 7), and when I clicked on it the whole list of my folders came scrolling down. Very stupid of me. Thank you for taking the time nonetheless.
