This is by design, please read the releases notes and more background information at http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/dmose/archives/2009/07/thunderbird_30b3_shipped.html. If you want that functionality back install the appropriate add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/search?q=header&cat=all&advancedsearch=1&as=1&appid=18&lver=any&atype=0&pp=20&pid=3&sort=&lup=

By design??? With all due respect but how can you do that? You are wasting around 10% of the available space on the monitor without building in any way to get that back? The addon you are referring to makes it a little better, but still 5% space is wasted. Please make it like it was so we can get rid of that ugly grey bar. When I started e-mailing I used Outlook Expresse on Windows 98. One of the first things I configured was getting rid of that bar. I have done so in every e-mail program on every OS I have used. Now suddenly it is impossible. This is a giant step backwards. If you don't want to loose users you really have to get it back a.s.a.p.
