Can you please read the article here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+consumes+a+lot+of+CPU+resources and follow the steps please?
After that, tell me whether the issue occurs again.

And what state do you mean? Is it a specific website or something?

Thank you for your prompt response.
I have installed the Flashblock plugin and await Firefox's behaviour over the next 24/48hrs. I run computers 24/7, usually with of 15-20 concurrent tabs which are mainly blogs, online newspapers, magazines and Google.
I would observe that Firefox now only occupies only 197Mb of reported Windows memory cf 543Mb before Flashblock plugin installation.

Apologies for not being clearer.
The state of discontinuous response whilst Firefox is showing high cpu usage in Windows Task manager.

OK, that doesn't give me much information still. What were you doing in firefox before you started seeing this? What website did you go to, how many websites were open... etc.

Just the normal browsing of blogs, newspaper and magazine web sites, and using Google. I usually have 15-20 tabs open at any given time.
The problem started within a day or two of installing the current version of Firefox. Previously I would have Mozilla running continuously for three, four or more weeks without a problem.
I think there was an upgrade of Flash required with the Firefox upgrade...???

Um, not required, but recommended. What version of flash are you running? Do those sites use flash?
Can you please create a new profile, don't make any changes to it, and try browsing there for a few days?

Flash 10. Judging by all the blanked out YouTube and other video windows I would say Flash content is all pervading in the MSM and many blogs.
I will conclude the Flash suppresor test and then try a new profile if there are any problems.

OK, that is a very old and insecure version of flash. Please update to the latest by going to adobe.com and downloading the newest mozilla firefox flash plugin.
