This GS thread:
http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/get_back_the_indicator_of_of_messages_in_a_folder
seems to be the same issue (in spite of my grossly misunderstanding what the issue was until the very end).

Have you gone into View, then checked "Status Bar"?
i have had the status bar checked in the view menu forever and it is still checked. i tried unchecking and checking but the status bar itself remains gone.

I started tb in safe mode (no-extensions mode) and the status bar did not appear. I unchecked view/statusbar and exited tb. I intended to start it again in safe mode and then I would check view/statusbar to see if it reappeared. But after starting tb in safe mode, the view/statusbar option was already checked and the status bar did not appear. The view/statusbar option must be automatically checked when you start in the safe mode. So the problem persists.
I have reverted to tb 2.0.0.23 and the status bar still does not appear no matter what I am able to do. There must be some overriding setting somewhere that prevents the status bar from appearing. I wish someone would solve this very annoying little problem. I need to see the status bar.

delete localstore.rdf in your profile folder with thunderbird shut down.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
your results?
Component: General → Mail Window Front End
QA Contact: general → front-end
Summary: status bar missing → status bar missing after enabling with View | Status Bar
> your results?
there was a localstore.rdf (199,325) and a localstore-safe.rdf (553) in my profile. i killed the first one by changing its extension and started tb. the folder pane on the left had "unread" "total" and "size" columns because those options were checked (not by me) and the status bar was still gone. the new localstore.rdf was 5116 in size. i reverted back to the original rdf. what is localstore-safe.rdf??

I don't know. maybe you should nuke both these files (move them to another diectory ) and start TB after that.
Anything in Tools -> Error console when you start ?

apparently localstore-safe.rdf is used when tb is started in safe mode.
i did as you suggested and nuked both localstore files, started tb, but the status bar was still missing. the error console didn't show anything meaningful, just an info item and an unrelated error item for a missing /a in a web page.

i don't think so. i auto hid the xp taskbar and the tb status bar didn't appear when the xp bar was hidden.

double click title bar brings it back for me, on the odd times that I see something like this.

FTR: "Duplicate" Bug 888796 was re-filed by reporter about same issue, so it's not a duplicate.

I'm 99% sure that this isn't a bug in TB (we'd see that more often if it was), so it must a unique case involving user's particular configuration, which practically makes this a support issue.
could this be an odd setting in userchrome.css?
be1310 (Reporter), can you check this:
From windows explorer, go into your TB profile folder
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder
In the profile folder, is there a subfolder called chrome?
If yes, does the chrome folder contain a file called UserChrome.css (or perhaps just called UserChrome if extensions are hidden)?
http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css
If yes
- copy that file into another folder for backup
- ensure TB is not running
- delete the original UserChrome.css
- start and restart TB in safe mode
- toggle View > Status bar on/off/on
Status bar reappears?

found and fixed!! the problem resides in the userchrome.css file. here is the fix.
starting at line 55 in my copy of the css file there is this section:
55 /* Remove the Go and Help menus
56 Id's for all toplevel menus:
57 file-menu, edit-menu, view-menu, go-menu, bookmarks-menu, tools-menu, helpMenu */
58 #menu-bar, #nav-bar, #toolbar-menubar, #status-bar {
59 display: none !important;
60 }
now this is a pretty messed up section because it does not remove the go and help menus as the comments describe. nor do these comments accurately describe the toplevel menus in tb 52.6. but the comments don't really matter. what matters is the actual code. the status bar is enabled simply by deleting the following from line 58 (starting with the comma that follows "menubar"):
", #status-bar"
then save the file back where it came from and restart tb. of course, in tb, view/toolbars/status bar must be checked.
