I received an email with an ssl.conf attachment that caused an error window to pop up.
Working down to a minimal error case, I ended up with the same symptom when the email just contains a single line containing "R+R:+H". I am sure many other strings would cause this, but hopefully the bug can be tracked down with this short string.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Send yourself an email containing (in the body) the line:
R+R:+H
2. When the mail has arrived in your inbox, click on it to read it
Actual Results:
An error message window pops up with the following content:
"An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Gecko. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly."
Clicking on "Details" shows:
Bad key or directory name: "/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/R+R/command": `+' is an invalid character in key/directory names
Bad key or directory name: "/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/R+R/command": `+' is an invalid character in key/directory names
Nothing else happens AFAICT, the message is then displayed correctly.
Expected Results:
Message should be displayed without popping up an error window.
This bug seems related to the following one (for thunderbird on sunOS, from 2005 that didn't get any attention at the time and is "RESOLVED EXPIRED")
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=288102
Also seems related to this one (thunderbird linux, but was FIXED in 2007 so I'm surprised it would still be present in recent seamonkey):

Duplicate Bug 549925 ?
Can you try and reproduce with SeaMonkey v2.0.3 ?

549925 seems unrelated AFAICT.
I just tested with SM 2.0.3, the bug is still there.
Can you or others not reproduce it?
Just send yourself an email with "R+R:+H" in the body, then view that email with SM. That pops up a (harmless) error window for me.
Works For Me
Please try in Safe mode ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Talk:Safe_Mode#Safe_Mode_in_SeaMonkey_2 ).
Is package from ftp server mozilla or repository Linux distribution?

I still have the bug in safe-mode.
I use Centos 5, we don't have seamonkey packages in this distrib so I download the source tarball and rebuild my own rpms. I use a simple spec file and don't apply any patches, so I doubt there's anything wrong with my build.
But just in case, I have tested (both in normal mode and safe mode) the pre-compiled version from:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/2.0.3/contrib/seamonkey-2.0.3.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2
I get the same bug with this version.
I suspect this is a problem in the interaction of SM with gnome. I have gnome installed. Do you?
Or maybe it's related to the message display options? I have
message body as: simple html, and display attachments inline.

Probably a DUP of Bug 288102. Setting dependency in the mean time

I agree it seems to be the same bug, as I had mentioned in the original report.
It's also the same as 541130 , which was reported just a week after this one but got a lot more attention (it's against tbird).
So: I suggest closing this bug as DUP 541130.
