Links that specify the Windows height, width, or hide part of the interface such as the the navigation bar are opened as separate windows. If you want these to open as tabs look into extensions such as tab mix plus or tab kit.

I just noticed this morning that when I click on links, a new window opens, instead of a new tab. I checked my Preferences setting and I have it set to open new links as new tabs so something is wrong. I checked both Firefox and Nightly and it is the same situation in both.
