"Hot designs" was intended to be a space where we highlighted the latest and greatest designs / and activity from the MCC. However, under the current algorithm, the designs that tend to bubble up here are not a representative batch of the best submissions to the MCC. Considering that the homepage has a lot of visibility... we'd like to change this section so it's not based on an algorithm, but is changed manually. That way we can ensure that the best/most interesting designs (and artists) are highlighted in this space. Therefore, "hot designs" would be picked internally by Mozilla staff. It can either be populated at random (random sort order) or preselected slots. Assigning to Ryan... please let me know what you think and how intensive of a task this would be. Thanks!
