To identify such threads, the underline text style is used. As new messages are usually the "read first" ones, it would be nicer to have such threads expanded up to the unread message, so its easily identified and easier to read. Reproducible: Always

Please note that I'm not talking about a new view option, like on bug 284336, but a setting that works *automatically*. Please close this one again if you feel this need will be satisfied by bug 284336, but I don't think this is the case.

Fred is bug 109742 more likely to be what you want ?
bug 109742 seems to describe this same need, with a much more compact description, even if it's talking about newsgroup reader.

This issue seems to be still valid.
I think both the threads should be expanded, and the visual feedback should be enhanced so when a thread is collapsed, it should be shown in bold. The underscore is barely visible, and if it is next to a single, unread email (which is in bold) is even less relevant.
