User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; SunOS sun4u; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100117 Firefox/3.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; SunOS sun4u; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100117 Firefox/3.6 I just downloaded the most recent version of Firefox (3.6) for use with Solaris 10 (workstation). I also downloaded the most current version of Java JDK (1.6.0_18). I placed a symbolic link for libjavaplugin_oji.so in to /opt/firefox/plugins and restarted the firefox browser. It does not recognize the java plugin when going to an internal site using a java applet at the company that I support. (I'm unable to provide URL as you will not be able to reach the site outside of Qwest Communications firewall.) I had no problem getting to the site and using the applet in Firefox 3.5.7. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install Firefox 3.6 2.Install Java JDK 1.6.0_18 3.ln -s libjavaplugin_oji.so /opt/firefox/plugins 4. Restart firefox 5. Go to URL using Java Applet Actual Results: Nothing is displayed related to the Java Applet. Expected Results: Java Applet will start and display menu and data. The Java Applet works correctly on Windows XP version of Firefox 3.6.

That can not work because the old oji plugin isn't supported anymore.
Use the NPAPI plugin, something like libnpjpi

There is a file in the JDK structure jre/lib/sparc/libnpjp2.so that I tried to place a symbolic link in to /opt/firefox/plugins. It didn't work either. I can't find anything else that looks "like libnpjpi". I tried searching the java.com site for additional instructions and only found reference to the old libjavaplugin_oji.so file usage. What is my next step?

/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.17/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so is the path on linux and should be correct (from bug 539471 ). Note: I'm only a win32 user but as bug triager here in bugzilla i only know that a plugin with oji is the old one and doesn't work anymore. Maybe someone else can help ? It could be that there is something broken on solaris, it's not a main platform for mozilla.org

If you are saying that a fix is not forthcoming soon, I'll drop back and continue to use version 3.5.7 for the near future. At this point, I just want someone to be aware of the issue.

Remove libjavaplugin_oji.so from /opt/firefox/plugins and $HOME/.mozilla/plugins. In /opt/firefox/plugins, create a symbolic link to libnpjp2.so. If it still doesn't work, try a Java applet demo on public website. Also please paste "about:plugins" result.

The local Java Applet still did not appear after making latest change. Content of /opt/firefox/plugins now looks like the following: 4046 cray:(/opt/firefox/plugins) # ls -la total 19582 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 512 Jan 29 06:47 . drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 1536 Jan 17 05:28 .. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9968952 Jan 26 07:55 libflashplayer.so lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 56 Jan 29 06:47 libnpjp2.so -> /usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.6.0_18/jre/lib/sparc/libnpjp2.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 42704 Jan 17 05:27 libnullplugin.so lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 63 Jan 26 07:56 nppdf.so -> /usr/lib/AdobeReader/Adobe/Reader8/Bwoser/sparcsolaris/nppdf.so 4047 cray:(/opt/firefox/plugins) # I went to the following site to get to a public Java Applet: http://www.schubart.net/rc/ (Rubik's Cube Java Applet) IT WORKED PERFECT. One more item to note now.... In the Tools -> Addons popup Plugins tab... Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_18 appears now. Previously, prior to this latest attempt, it did not.

I just talked to the developer of the local site. He indicated that the applet was compiled/developed with the 1.3 version of Java and has been meaning to bring the applet up to a more recent version of Java. It doesn't explain why it works correctly on Windows XP version of Firefox 3.6 but may provide information if there is a compatability issue on the Solaris side with the 1.6 plugin.

This same type of behavior seems to affect the Windows version of Firefox as well.

When I visit, http://www.schubart.net/rc/, using Firefox 3.6.2 and Java 1.4.2_08 - it does NOT work at all. It says: Sorry, it seems that Java is disabled on your system or not supported by your web browser. Again, Windows XP + all patches + Firefox 3.6.2 and unfortunately, I have to use 1.4.2_08 for Qwest internal sites.

Note: Firefox 1.6.x requires Java 1.6 U10 or later with the new plugin., The old OJI plugin is now unsupported.
