When a tab is dragged and dropped on the bookmarks toolbar for it to be bookmarked, a duplicate entry for same link is added when the bookmark is already present.

So what? We support creating more than one bookmark for the same page, that's a feature, not a bug.
but, what is the need for more than one bookmark for the same link. Unnecessary.. right?

Could be unnecessary for you but necessary for someone other, right? The API supports that, the UI follows the API, that is not going to change in the immediate future afaict.
Since this is by design the bug is a wontfix imo, but if you want to open a discussion in moz.dev.apps.firefox about making bookmarks uniques and get feedback from our user experience team you're free and welcome to.

hmm duplicatable bookmarks is actually a feature i need sometimes.
i was actually hoping there would be some checkbox in the 'edit-bookmark' dialog box that would select between 'edit existing' vs 'create duplicate' when the bookmark already exists somewhere.
it is good if duplicate bookmarks are avoided at least within the same folder...

the benefit here is small, but it's non-trivial amount of work to figure how to clarify to the user why he can't drop the link there, the usual D&D ui would clearly be inefficient. So in the end fixing this the behavior would become confusing by not having a way to say the user "see you already have this bookmark", he would be left wondering why sometimes it works and sometimes doesn't. Creating the duplicate is minor annoyance in comparison.
