Setting custom category colors results in a consistent "blue" calendar item with a small custom category stripe down the right-hand edge of calendar item.
This stripe is difficult to see and is not terribly helpful...
Suggest instead that the custom category color be applied as the background to calendar items. The custom color "black" may need to be removed from the palette to keep folks from obscuring black text with a black background.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Set custom category color
2.Create a calendar item
3.Apply the custom category color
Actual Results:
Custom color shows up as narrow stripe at righthand edge of calendar item.
Expected Results:
Custom color serves as background color to calendar item.

Could you post a screenshot of what you mean? If the category has no color, then there is just a stripe. In the options, you can give categories specific colors, in which case the stripe should be colored.
What I mean is that the stripe itself is hard to see. I'd like the entire calendar item background to be set in the custom color. I'm suggesting that consideration be given to getting rid of the stripe entirely. The stripe is hard to see. Much easier if the whole calendar item background is set to the custom color.

Our current approach is to give the calendar item the color of the assigned calendar and show the category color in the right-hand stripe.
Yes I know. It's not a good approach because the there's not much visual contrast between the "boring blue" background color and the "stripe" color.

The contrast is low if you have no color assigned, but with a color it looks quite different. Is this sufficient?
Until your comment, I didn't realize "calendars" had colors. What this means is that to get the visual look I want, I really shouldn't use "categories", but instead create (in my case)6 different calendars, each with their own color.
The approach I am advocating would allow a single calendar with color-coded entries that look as if they were associated with different calendars, without the hassle of creating multiple calendars just to get visual appearance that allows me to tell the entries apart easily.

I see what you mean. I think this is rather something that should be done in an extension, since not everyone uses just one calendar with multiple categories. Also, not everyone uses categories to manage their events.

Summary: Custom Category colors show only "stripe" at right hand edge, not background color of calendar item → Color events by category, not by calendar color [extension fodder]

Found an extension that can do this, among other things: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/calendar-tweaks/. This might be interesting for people wanting the functionality described in this bug.
