Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20091221 Firefox/3.5.7
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100111 Thunderbird/3.0.1

When I have multiple open tabs in TBird and exit I do not get a request to confirm. I do in Firefox. Firefox behavior preferred.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a message to read
2. Hit x in upper right corner to close (message window)
3. Oops
Actual Results:
TBird closes

Confirm dialogue to prevent closing TBird when I wanted to close a tab.
Note that Thunderbird will automatically restore all tabs when it reopens; this is not a dataloss bug, therefore, but merely an annoyance that Thunderbird does not have an option to offer the choice of staying open when multiple tabs would be closed.

A possible workaround is to set Thunderbird to open messages in a new window, as was the behavior in previous versions.
