Please retest in safe-mode / with a new profile:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile
and do you have *any* history? If Firefox is set not to remember history it runs in Private Browsing mode and then it also clears the clipboard.

Further Pondering:
Seems to only show up in WIN2000 Pro
Don't think I've seen it in XP, on two other systems. Win2000 is mostly
used.
Does NOT show up consistently in Windows 2000, but mostly does.
Is WIN2000 supported???????????????????
Workaround: use NETSCAPE, or IE. Which handle same tasks Just Fine.
Speculation:
'CUT'(copy) seems to occur fine, maybe.
PASTE is visibly impossible: paste function in dropdown menu, or popup
menu greyed. Commonly the on screen popup WON'T APPEAR. paste to
other entities (text files, etc), typically possible.
Related Speculation:
Possibly due to 'mishandling' of popup menu as blocked popup?
(I'm thinking of one website, with popup, which blocks the
related popup including 'copy image to ...'. Same Site allows
image copy when accessed with netscape, or IE....)
...set up...
Perhaps it would be possible that the default setup mimic normal
to windows behaviour.
(No: I don't spend huge time troubleshooting. I aim to _use_.
simply switch to netscape or .... until the nuisance fades.)

Wellll. Its been a week since install of FIREFOX 3.6.2.
No other obvious changes (save some java 'corrections'?)
Edit and other right button functions seem much more reliable.
Looks better.
