I installed the United_states_english_dictionary-4.0.0-fx+tb+sm according to the instructions. I checked through the add-on procedure and the dictionary is installed. Nevertheless, it can not be used (activated)

Hum looks like a bad install - can you try reinstalling please ?

do you still see this problem when using a current version of thunderbird? 

And if you do not, please close bug report by changing resolution to worksforme
