Hello.

I am subscribing to a RSS feed with address of http://rss.kbench.com/news.xml

If you connect to the portal http://www.kbench.com with Firefox, you'll notice that they have a popup window event going on. You'll see there is a "Close" button on the botton right, with a checkbox to disable further popups for the rest of the day.

Now, from Thunderbird, the popup also occurs as a new tab when I click on to one of the articles received in my news inbox. At the new tab, I can also see the "Close" button and disable checkbox as I do with Firefox.

The problem is that I can't press this "Close" button, and TB will pop a new tab over and over until I try to read different feed from other sites.

The action associated with "Close" button is javascript:closeWin() but I guess this isn't working on TB.

Could you kindly look into this matter? At least I think there should be an option to disable popups in TB as we do in Firefox.

Thank you very much.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Subscribe to http://rss.kbench.com/news.xml with Thunderbird
2. Try to read any article received from the feed

Actual Results:
A pop-up tab (window) will occur and will not go away, which will happen repeatedly whenever you try to read any article from that site. I literally cannot read any article from this feed.

Expected Results:
Best) Tab should close when I press the close button and not occur until the end of the day
Acceptable) Option to disable popup
Compromise) Option to keep the tab focus on my current reading tab, not new pop-up
Mark is this something that should be dealt in the content-policy ?

Confirming and very annoying.

This is pretty nasty; I think we need to block on this.
blocking-thunderbird3.1: ? → rc1+
We're resetting the blocking flag for 3.1 on this bug and instead setting the wanted-thunderbird+ flag. We have too many blocking-3.1 bugs, to the point where it doesn't mean much, and managing the list is making it hard to actually work on closing bugs, which helps no one.

Thunderbird 3.1's primary purpose is to allow us to offer a prompted major update to Thunderbird 2 users, to ensure their continued ability to safely use Thunderbird. Thunderbird 2 is built on an outdated version of Gecko, and our long-term ability to maintain the users' safety for Thunderbird 2 users is limited.

If you think this bug meets the requirements below, please renominate with a detailed explanation of how it meets the following two criteria, and we will reconsider. To qualify, this bug must either:

a) make the upgrade experience from TB2 very painful for a large number of users

or

b) be a new, reproducible, severe quality issue (eg dataloss, frequent crashes)

Just because this bug doesn't block TB3.1 doesn't mean it can't or won't make the release. Once they're done with their blockers (if any), we encourage developers to keep working on non-blocking bugs, and to try to land them as early in the cycle as possible, as non-blocking bugs will become increasingly difficult to land in the later stages of the cycle.

Dear friends,

I am unsure if this qualifies as block issue, but sure does block my TB experience severely.

If any of you could look into this issue again, that would be very helpful.

It seems that TB is incapable of executing JavaScript commands such as popupClose(); within the viewing screen.

Thank you once again.

Attached patch WIPSplinter Review
This patch adds/sets the preferences required for blocking popups. We'll need to copy some code from Firefox for the UI (see gPopupBlockerObserver in browser.js), and make sure the UI doesn't apply to feeds or messages.

Having the same issue with RSS http://lenta.ru/rss Almost every time I open an article there (a page), it opens "http://lentaru.stat.eagleplatform.com/stat/default_player_load" in my default browser. This is really-really annoying and I can't do anything about it :(

Thank you very much for your help!
