Usually you use Space, to pause/play YouTube-Videos, as long as they're in focus, not computer-specific keys.

I did notice that it became harder sometimes using the mouse to pause/play on you-tube but space bar does work for me in FF 19. Make sure when you try to play and pause that the FF window is selected by clicking inside the browser anywhere.

To try and see if your bug is existent I have tried my less then 1 year old keyboard and used the FN button then play/pause key and it worked. It may be like I said you not selecting the FF window or it could also be your keyboard that may cause it.

I'm experiencing the same "bug" using devices from logitech (a keyboard and a headset)

the media buttons for work for normal music applications and stuff like that

on youtube or soundcloud you normally use the space bar of course

but that only works if the tab is in focus (and no textarea or something like it is in focus)
for my wireless headset it would be nice if I could use the play/pause and maybe even the next/previous buttons for pages like youtube or soundcloud (if they use the audio/video html5 tag)

or at least Firefox should forward such buttons to the page somehow (so that the page can decide whether it wants to react to it or not)
