Build Identifier:

Auto addition of email addresses has created a massive address book.

TB3. Composing an email to say "David" brings up my regular David well down a list of a dozen or so and takes ages to scroll down to find the one I want buried in many I've never heard of. Tedious in the extreme.

Ideally would like the Contacts Sidebar to enable me to drag up or copy my regular 10-12 contacts to a group at the top for instant sight and selection.

Reproducible: Always
I believe most of this bug is a duplicate of bug 497722, which will be fixed in 3.0.2 (to be released within a few weeks).
The manual sorting of contacts might also be useful, so I'm changing this bug to reflect that. (Leaving UNCO as I'm not sure if this feature will ever go into Thunderbird; it might be useful as an extension, though.)

Like comment 1, I suspect that this proposal is trying to solve a specific problem/expectation that:
a) came from bugs around popularityIndex that we've solved
b) would better be solved with different solution(s)

Bug 382415 (implement autocomplete frecency) would solve the scenario of this bug nicely out of the box, without requiring user intervention: Thunderbird will dynamically learn which contacts you prefer from which search input.

Defining fixed orders of favourite contacts, or even just favourite contacts at all as this bug suggests, comes with the drawback that users will have to constantly manually update their favourite expectations as they change over time. While bug 382415 will just do the same thing for them automatically. Which works perfectly in Firefox's awesome location bar.

I'm not sure how to handle this report; along comment 1, I think that:
- it's very unlikely that we'll add "manual sorting of contacts" into TB core
- it's unlikely that we'll add "define favorite contacts" into TB core (because bug 382415 is much superior in doing the same automatically), but it could be explored

So for the moment, adjusting summary to keep the idea, but can't confirm as-is.
Summary: Allow manual adjustment of auto-complete contact order, contacts sidebar order → Allow manual adjustment of auto-complete contact order, contacts sidebar order (explore feasibility of letting user define "favourite contacts")
