I simply do not want an IMAP account.  I want pop3, yet it autofills each time I reload after uninstall and erasing in registry.  How to make it do a pop3 account is what I want - after an IMAP has been removed 

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Uninstall Thunderbird
2.  Go to registry and remove all Mozilla/thunderbird reference
3.Shut down - restart - download thunderbird 5 & it still autofills for IMAP?
Actual Results:  
It still auto fills for IMAP when I want to do a manual set-up

Expected Results:  
I want a pop3 account - same as on other older computers

Uninstalling Thunderbird does not remove the profile, where you account is stored. This means that you're still using the old account ! If you want to remove that and add another one, go to Tools->Account Settings.

Setting up  Gmail account  defaults to IMAP

Using Thunderbird 3, XP , "create account" did not bring up the wizard as in Thunderbird 2, but took me straight to  a Name, Email, Password screen.
On giving my gmail account it retrieved everything OK but defaulted to IMAP, always. Selecing MANUAL thereafter and trying to edit, was no use as you cannot edit the server type.

I found a work-around of a sort: starting with an existing  POP3 account, I changed all the settings to those needed for Gmail, and, Voila.
But thats not how it should be.

This i snot a invalid bug.. it's poorly reported, but a very real issue.  There is no way to create a pop account if the server in your reply-to mail address responds to an Imap request.  The auto account setup creates an Imap account, and there is no way to manually add a pop account.  The only way I could work around this is to start the account creation with a fake e-mail address (test@test).  then I was able to manually input my server information.

I tried that too. No result. Thunderbird simply won't let me create a second 
POP-3 e-mail account at all. Only an automatic IMAP account "ONLY" every time.
The setup of a new account, simply, can't happen. It jumps to IMAP and doesn't respond to any controls or buttons like "STOP", "ADVANCE" etc.

Robert, here's an easy work-around for you.  When you start the account creating dialogue, don't fill in your whole e-mail address, (leave out the .com .net, or whatever)  Thunderbird will then fail the auto-detection quickly, and you can change the server type to POP from the drop down, fill in the correct Incoming / Outgoing server details, and click Manual Setup to put it in.  Note that you also have to correct the Pop3 port number.

I meant to add, the usual port number for Pop should be 110.
