If I try to search for "openvpn" using the new search feature, then I don't get any results. I see the turning "hourglass" wheel, but it doesn't show any results. I waited for 10 minutes, but it doesn't stop searching. See attached screen shot.
I _did_ get some suggestions below the input field while I was typing the search string, though.
Reproducible: Always

POP3's local mail folder(or Local Folders)? Or IMAP?
If IMAP, "offline use" is enabled? (Folder Properties/Synchronization)
What is your choice for "upside-down triangle" just right of "magnifying glass"
in "search box" of your screen shot?
Is "Global Search and Indexer" enabled?
Does your problem occur even with -safe-mode of Tb?
If IMAP and "offline use"=Off, dup of bug 541400?

It is IMAP (dovecot 1.2.9). "Offline use" is not set. Search mode is "Search all messages". Global Search and Indexer is enabled. The problem shows up for "-safe-mode", too.
I doubt that this is the same problem as 541400. My imap server is fine all the time. Of course I would be glad to try the fix for 541400, though.

I have stopped Thunderbird and removed global-messages-db.sqlite. On the next start Thunderbird went busy for some minutes to rebuild the database, and then the global search worked as expected.
Rebuilding the index just for Inbox or other folder did not help. Maybe a "global" button to rebuild the index would be nice.

> using the new search feature, (snip)
What feature do you mean by "using new search feature"?
You mean Tools/Options/Advanced/General, "Global Search and Indexer" is checked?
> If I try to search for "openvpn" (snip)
What is your opertion? Is next correct? If so, which?
An IMAP account is selected at folder pane,
and, at Quick search box (Search box of toolbar),
a. openvpn is typed, and Enter is pressed.
b. openvpn is typed, and select from candidates.
If a. what is your filter selection at selection list of "hand glass" icon in Search box?
If b. what kind of search did you request?
(In reply to comment #3)
> Search mode is "Search all messages".
What setting at which window/panel do you mean?
You mean that you selected account instead of a folder at folder pane?
> "Offline use" is not set.
Is "offline use=off" set for all folder of the IMAP account?
What is your setting of "Message Synchronizing" of "Synchronization & Storage"?
Please note next.
(1) per folder "offline use" setting.
If you do next, "offline use=on" is set for all folders of the IMAP acount.
- Change "Keep messages for ..." from unchecked to checked.
If you do next, "offline use=off" is set for all folders of the IMAP acount.
- Change "Keep messages for ..." from checked to unchecked.
(2) If IMAP mails were already downloaded by auto-sync into offline-store when some IMAP folders were set "offline use=on", "Global Indexer and Search" indexes mail data in offline-store even after you changed to "offline use=on".
If all folders of the IMAP account is "offline use=off", delete offline-store file(Inbox, instead of Inbox.msf, if folder of Inbox), in order to start from clean status for problem analysis.
- No offline-store data for IMAP folder
- "Global Indexer and Search" = on
- global-messages-db.sqlite is initialized (by your delete),
and only mails in local mail folder is indexed by indexer.
Note: Per folder option of "index or not" is already requested.

I cannot reproduce this problem anymore (using Thunderbird 3.1.7). I would suggest to close this report.
