The best feature, the system sound for incoming mail does not work. Does not work on my Intel Mac nor my PPC Mac. It won't even let me select a sound.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Try to select a sound or check system sound. Can't do it. Won't pick up sound. Choices not available. In non-selectable background mode.

Bug 194632 looks related, but that's long been fixed. Bug 544232 is also similar; please follow the troubleshooting directions there and report results here.

In particular, a screenshot of the preference screen would be good.

Started in safe mode.  Same problem.  Looked at other bug reports that were similar, no help.  Attached screen shots for both system sound and browse. I have the screen shots, but how do I attach here on this report form?

I resolved problem by copying system folder sound files (.aiff files) which cannot be changed and are not compatible with TBird 3 to my personal sound folder in my library. Then I downloaded the free sound file converter SWITCH.  I converted the files to .wav format. Then I did the browse thing in the TBird prefs under chose this file. Voila. The mail notification now works.
