User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2.2pre) Gecko/20100302 Lanikai/3.1b1 I'm running a offline disk space Litmus test for 3.1 beta 1 - "offline settings/flagging and selecting messages". Thunderbird is online. A test folder in a IMAP account is configured in folder properties as a offline folder but is not checked in message synchronization. It has six messages, three of them starred. I deleted the mbox file but not the index file before starting Thunderbird. I selected the test folder and then file -> offline -> get stared messages. I saw status text that looked like it was downloading 3 messages from that folder. However, when I switch to working offline I get the following message text: "The body of this message has not been downloaded from the server for reading offline. To read this message, you must reconnect to the network, choose Offline from the File menu and then uncheck Work Offline. In the future, you can select which messages or folders to read offline. To do this, choose Offline from the file menu and then select Synchronize. You can adjust the Disk Space preference to prevent the downloading of large messages." I set Thunderbird to working online, and selected the three messages in that folder that were not stared. It listed them as a conversation in the message pane. I then used file -> offline -> get selected messages. I didn't see any status text indicating that it did anything. I switched to working offline, and tried to read one of those messages. I got the same error text as when I tried to read the stared message. As an aside that menu has the working offline icon next to Offline settings. If I select that it brings up tools -> account settings -> synchronization & storage for that account. I expected it to bring up tools -> options -> advanced -> network & disk space -> offline settings. I exited Thunderbird and used Vim to look at the contents of the mbox file. It had downloaded 5 of the 6 messages. It had not downloaded the last message listed in the folder, a non-stared multipart/alternative message. Starting Thunderbird and going offline again it now lets me read all six messages. However, the sixth one (the one not in the mbox file) actually lists the message content of the fourth. I don't believe this was due to normal mbox corruption as the mbox file was deleted in order to run this test. I went back online and rebuilt the index. It only lists one message. I logged into webmail using my browser and it has six messages. I exited Thunderbird and deleted the mbox and index file for that folder, and restarted Thunderbird. It now lists the six messages and the sixth message has the correct message body. I used my Fastmail account which has a Cyrus IMAP server. Reproducible: Always

Eric, any chance you could retest this?

Eric is there still an issue?

I re-tested using Thunderbird (32-bit) version 60.7.0 under Windows 10. Lightning had been deleted. Global search/indexing is enabled. I'm unable to retest the original bug as working offline no longer enables file -> offline -> work offline -> get starred messages or get selected messages.

  1. I configured my Fastmail IMAP account to sync just the inbox and inbox.misc.info folders, and verified they were synced using the activity manager. I exited Thunderbird and deleted the "info." mbox file for the inbox.misc.info offline folder, leaving "info.msf" alone. Fastmail is my default account.

When I start Thunderbird and switch to working offline I get "Fastmail: Looked up mail.messagingengine.com..." in the status bar on the bottom. mail.messagingengine.com is the IMAP server for my Fastmail account. I'm on a legacy plan, which is why its not imap.fastmail.com . Since Thunderbird is working offline it should not do anything with the network unless I use file -> offline menu commands to fetch messages . It doesn't seem appropriate for it to be looking up the server if it is not supposed to connect to it.

  1. I selected the inbox.misc.info folder in the folder pane and then one of its messages. "get starred message" and "get selected messages" is greyed despite file -> offline -> work offline being checked, and there being 3 starred messages in the folder. Same problem if I select the inbox. I notice download/sync now is also greyed out. I expected that to be enabled. Selecting the inbox, inbox.misc.info or a non-offline folder has no effect on what is greyed out.

  2. I had originally been configured to "automatically detect online state". I changed that to "remember previous online state", set Thunderbird to working offline, exited, and restarted. I verified file -> offline -> working offline was still checked.

I can read messages in remote folders that have mbox files and in search folders that are based upon folders with mbox files, but get the expected "The body of this message has not been downloaded from the server for reading offline. To read this message, you must reconnect to the network, choose Offline from the File menu and then uncheck Work Offline. In the future, you can select which messages or folders to read offline. To do this, choose Offline from the file menu and then select Download/Sync Now. You can adjust the Disk Space preference to prevent the downloading of large messages." in other folders. This is consistent with my working offline.

"get starred message" and "get selected messages" is greyed despite file -> offline -> work offline being checked. The online/offline icon in the lower left corner of the main window has a little red X (indicating offline).

If the conditions of this original bug report no longer exist we should close this as invalid. (And I don't see it in a current beta build)

If there is something that doesn't work in a current nightly or beta build, please file a new bug report.
