A plugin that launches as a helper app (specifically the RealAudio RealPlayer plugin) from a link in a web page will not launch if the the URL is typed in the URL bar or made a bookmark. For instance, the link http://kalx.berkeley.edu/kalx.ram will launch RealPlayer if I click on it. If I type the same think into the URL bar or make it a bookmark, I get the "Unknown File Type" dialog which says I am about to download the unknown file type audio/x-pn-realaudio. I look at about:plugins and see that only the MIME type audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin is registered. So I then go to Preferences and try to make an entry in Helper Applications for audio/x-pn-realaudio. When I hit OK, I get a message saying "A helper already exists for the MIME type 'audio/x-pn-realaudio'. Do you want to replace it?" I choose OK, and Mozilla goes back to the MIME type editor dialog. I hit OK again, and I get the already registered dialog. I can hit OK forever and keep pinging between these two dialogs. Finally I hit Cancel and get out of Preferences. If I type the .ram URL in the URL bar, I am now back to getting the "Unknown File Type" dialog. Tested on Mozilla 100308 on NT4.
I should mention that this all worked fine in NN4.
