The summary is kind of self-explanatory. 

On certain sites I visit - not all of them and not every time I visit them - Firefox renders a black vertical strip that blinks all the time providing an awful browsing experience. Other browsers, including Firefox based browser Flock, render the same sites at  correctly, 

This bug appeared after version 3.5.5. and was never actually corrected, although it got less frequent with more recent versions.

This bug also appears in Firefox 3.6.3 on Mandriva Linux.

The problem are still there in 3.6.8 on Mandriva Linux

Sounds like caret browsing was enabled. Press F7 to disable it. Reopen if this isn't the case and it still occurs with a more updated url.
