Why do you use different setting from Gmail's guide? Are you intentinally testing different setting?

> Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS or SSL: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
> Use Authentication: Yes
> Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
> Port for SSL: 465
> Account Name: your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)
Note:
Some users reported problem with SSL(SSL/TLS of Tb). Use StartTLS of Tb's setting.
Did you use profile by Tb 2 before start to use Tb 3.04?
If yes, bug 522633 can happen.
If other connection such as POP3, IMAP, News also fails, check personal firewall software setting.

I had the settings originally like you show and then changed trying to make it work. They are now correct and still will not work. I noticed in the bug 522633 a possible fix but do not know how to apply the patch to see if that will fix it.

When I first noticed the problem that is what is was and is what it is now. I only changed it to see if that would fix the problem.

Did you check current setting? (not by you originally. by Tb, by upgrade of Tb)
Can you show us current SMTP settings displayed by "Outgoing Server(SMTP)" of Account Settings and "Edit" of the SMTP server entry at SMTP server list?
> I noticed in the bug 522633 a possible fix but do not know how to apply the patch to see if that will fix it.
Did you read well/thru and understand bug 522633?
If bug bug 522633 happens when upgrade to Tb 3.0.x, Tb3.0.x wrongly changes next setting without your permission upon upgrade.
> Secure Authentication: No => Yes
If it happens, you need to change the setting back manually, because bug 522633 is not fixed yet.
Did you check firewall software setting? (do you understand that Tb3.0.x != Tb2 for firewall software?)

All settings are what they should be;
server name: smtp.gmail.com
port: 587
Security and Authentication
Use name and password checked
User Name: xxxxx.xxxxxx@gmail.com
use secure authentication unchecked
connection security: STARTTLS
these are what it was prior to changing anything to troubleshoot
In answer to the firewall software settings I have no idea of what you are talking about.

I have the exact same (Looking up smtp.gmail.com...) problem.
Yesterday upgraded from a perfectly working 2.0.0.2x to 3.0.3 and then updated to 3.04. In 2.0.0.2x all worked fine! In 3.0.4 after opening Thunderbird all goes fine when I send mail. Howver, after some time (could be minutes) Thunderbird 3.0.4 gives me the SMTP sending poblem. Of course a windows shell can resolve smtp.gmail.com without any problems. I can ping smtp.gmail.com and have a round trip time of approx 15ms. So the problem has nothing to do with DNS.
I checked each Google Apps account SMTP settings:
Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 587
User Name: My full Google Apps e-mail address
Secure Authentication: No
Connection Security: STARTTLS
I also disabled indexing (Enable Global Search and Indexer) and Windows Search (Allow Windows Search to search messages), but this did not make any difference.
I have a theory:
A while after opening TB3, TB3 is syncing my 11 Google Premier Edition Apps accounts by Imap in the background. Some of these accounst have approx 15000 to 60000 emails in the all mail folder. So there is quite some activity going on in the background. When I startup TB3, the activity is not started immediately and I can send without problem.... Could TB3 be out of connections or something like that, so that it can't connect to smtp.gmail.com
PLEASE find the solution to this problem, as it has completly crippled my TB installation, which I use daily for my work.
Thanks,
Luke

- are you still seeing this?
Luke, indexing and search are totally unrelated. Have you checked at http://www.mozillamessaging.com/support ... the knowledgebase and the support forum?
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?chfieldto=Now&query_format=advanced&chfieldfrom=2010-01-01&short_desc=Send%20fail&bug_severity=major&bug_severity=normal&short_desc_type=anywordssubstr&longdesc=Sending%20of%20message%20failed&type0-0-0=nowords&value0-0-0=count%20counts&resolution=---&resolution=FIXED&resolution=INVALID&longdesc_type=substring&product=MailNews%20Core&product=Thunderbird
Summary: since upgrading to tb 3.03 have been unable to send mail when using gmail settings → since upgrading to tb 3.03 have been unable to send mail when using gmail settings. Sending of message failed.
