So, what is your issue? Please explain clearly what you are seeing. Is java trying to upgrade itself? And firefox is saying that java is incompatible? What version of java are you trying to update to?

The issue is That JAVA (or firefox hard to tell?) requests an update be installed.
Once done, whichever decides update must be UN installed.
The cycle repeats until the user notices the repetition.
popup advised upgrading java items.
Did so, using update in firefox tools.
on restart of firefox, per request, popup immediately informed that the
'update' was 'incompatible', and would be removed.
Then:
popup advised upgrading [the same] java items.
Did so, using update in firefox tools.
on restart of firefox, per request, popup immediately informed that the
'update' was 'incompatible', and would be removed.

[OK: the last iteration never happened, as the endless loop was noticed by
user who stopped accepting the proffered upgrades.]
As noted: if this has not been seen elsewhere, disregard.

What exactly does the popup say?

Comment 4•16 years ago

...popups...
Two are involved, at least.
First says, roughly
routine java mumble upgrade fooo available
Second, after download/install/firefox restart, says, roughly:
upgrade fooo not compatible [with firefox?], will be uninstalled.
At the moment this is NOT occurring, was noticed a week or so ago,
then stopped. In any case, whichever version of firefox just came out
(3.6.2?) is now installed, so thats changed...
May be 'wait and see' is good approach.

I dont want "routine java mumble upgrade fooo available" that could be any number of things. If you see it again, give the exact message. WFM for now.

Appreciate the time and interest.
Its back. Think i can replicate at will.
If its me being stoooopid: apologies.
Tried to document in detail....
Current: firefox 3.6.2
Firefox popup Offered: Three add on Updates.
Proceded one at a time..
(nonrelavant one, proceded OK, restarted FIREFOX)
Two now offered by firefox/tools/addons/check for updates
Java Console 6.0 to 6.0.01
java console 6.0.02 to 6.0.02.03
(idle Curiosity; should there be simultaneously TWO VERSIONS:
6.0 and 6.0.02 of 'java console' present?
Should one be removed?
by Mere User?
by firefox?)
Proceding one at a time, deselect java console 6.0.02 to 6.0.02.03,
leaving java console 6.01 to 6.0.01 selected.
clicked install, instal completed, restarted FIREFOX.
got a spontaneous popup (from firefox?)
-----------------via cutnpaste--------------------
6.0.0
The Java Console extension is no longer supported and will be automatically removed the next time you restart Firefox. This will not affect any Java applications or websites in any way.
Do you want to restart Firefox now?
--------------------------------------------------
Simultaneously ANOTHER firefox popup reoffered:
java console 6.0.02 to 6.0.02.03
NOT installing java console 6.0.02 to 6.0.02.03
(to avoid muddying waters)
shut down firefox/restarted.
Two updates, now offered by firefox/tools/addons/check for updates:
Java Console 6.0 to 6.0.01
java console 6.0.02 to 6.0.02.03
One of these: Java Console 6.0 to 6.0.01
is the one just tossed (by firefox(?)) as no longer supported.
This install/deinstall will contnue until user becomes bored,
falls asleep, or wakes up.
(I'm guessing one too many Java Consoles? Should firefox, or user,
catch this?)
(No further updates for java console will attempted done for now...)

Alright, what is happening is you have ancient versions of java installed. You are using 6u1, which is no longer supported on firefox 3.6, you need 6u10 or later. So, go to add remove programs, uninstall all JRE, java, etc. Then go to java.com, and download and install the latest version. Java used to have issues where it would update, and not remove the old version, just install next to it, hence the reason you have multiple java versions.

I Agree that it is a duplicate problem.
As it recurred today, it's not resolved for me unless the cure is ignore popup, but that doesn't stop it from coming back ....
coming back ...
etc.

As I said on your bug and this one, uninstall all versions of java on your computer, than install 6update 18, and see if it still happens.

uninstall/reinstall of JAVA bits complete, ran for a few hours,
firefox update does not offer 'the oldies'. So far, so good.
Appreciate the interest/etc...
