This issue is so bad the page is unreadable and I must use a different browser

Can you provide an example URL and screenshot?

If you go to View -> Character Encoding what is selected? If you change it to Unicode (UTF-8) does the text appear correctly?

Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

How about with a new, empty profile? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles

If you go to Tools -> Options and click on Content what is the default font listed under the Fonts & Colors heading? From the screenshot it looks like it could be a font issue

I do not show an "Options" link under "Tools"

Tim,

I found Fonts & Colors under "pref" - my default font is "Times"

When I checked my fonts through "FontAgent Pro 3.0" I do not show any corrupt fonts.

If you highlight the text and paste it into a text editor, does the text appear correctly? It looks like the page is being displayed in a strange font.

Tim, I tried the profile earlier it did not work.

I did find a temporary solution - 
I unchecked "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above."

I still have the issue with the information on the bottom of "youtube" video widndows and some drop down menues.

Yes - I have temporary solved the problem – by deselecting – "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" (under preferences >Content)
