I reproduce this using an IMap account, though other account types might work too.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Compose new message (or reply to an existing message)
2. Close the main Thunderbird window so only the Compose/Reply window remains open
3. Hit Send
4. Thunderbird complains "There was an error copying the message to the Sent folder. Retry?"

This issue can be reproduced 100% of the time. I have set a high priority level because this bug results in data loss. Once you get into this state, it becomes impossible to save a record of the mail being sent out.

You're in luck: when you update to 3.0.4 (to be released fairly soon) you should be able to get rid of this bug.
