Now that we aren't trying to pull certs from XPI's before downloading I believe we can use the download manager service for progress and get for free pausing/resuming and AV scanning.
As long as we can be sure we don't pollute the default DLMGR ui with the xpi downloads, and as long as we can avoid UI redundancy with "Download Finished", "Starting", etc. types of notifications I agree this would be a good idea. I just hope all the needed stuff here can be done backend since the toolkit DLMGR supports additional UI implementations.
Why do you think that XPIs shouldn't appear in the download manager UI?
I'm self-admittedly no UI expert; but I feel that if using the browser to install an Addon, that the .xpi file appearing in the download manager, when the user doesn't expect to be "adding a file to their harddrive" to be jarring.

The addon manager UI should handle the progress/status of addon installs imho. Having disjointed stuff would be bad. Though I suppose a compromise that I could live with is the DLMGR handling stuff, but the addonmanager removing the downloaded xpi after it hits the HD and removing it from the UI once it handles it.
This could also relate to the fact that the Tbird Download Manager always shuts down after downloading an attachment.
The "ctrl+j" function could be introduced to keep the download manager open, and to find the files that were downloaded from the email.
Is this possible, based on this discussion?

We really have to think about how to visualize that an add-on is downloaded in the background (add-ons manager is not open). Right now the user doesn't get informed and will probably click multiple times on the install button.

Dave, if we do not want to go with the download manager option, I can file a new bug to show a download status notification.

Bug 570012 is the blocker here (though one possible way to solve it would be to fix this bug)
