Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100227 Thunderbird/3.0.3

Simple. If you rename more than say three of your custom added email save folders you might and finally do lockup the software.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Rename 2 or 3 or 4 of your custome named email saving folders.
2. Thunderbird will not quit normally must be force quit in mac.
3. Restart it won't! But does ask for bug report to Apple.
4. To fix you must install 2.009 or some other previous version that can recover.
5. Then reinstall the 3+ version of the software.
Oddly folders are now duplicating but with no contents in them yet by the same name!
More info: First renaming of a email custom named folder like "save last years email" works. Second renaming of it leaves the first rename with zero data in the underlying subfolders.

Have you tried safe mode? (see https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode for more information)

Anything in Tools -> Error console when this happens ?
For now I just look in the Mac Thuderbird email Library folder and delete the extra zero files by the old name. Only seem to get them if I do two email folder name changes during a session. I must have 30 or more custom save email folders.

Possible Work Around: I bet if I quit out of Thunderbird after one renaming then re-started then renamed the 2nd time it would not leave the old folders.

At least they don't take up space. Anyway I can't work on this any more since I have so much business to do. Maybe someone will discover why it happens some day.

Thank you for trying! It is much appreciated! Good day!
Rename of local mail folder? Or rename of IMAP folder?
Is "to rename a same mail folder multiple times" involved in your problem?
Is special character used in your mail folder name.

If IMAP, and if "multiple space in folder name" is involved, see 380655. Same problem?
No special characters. Just changing a name without exiting will leave a dead old copy out there under the one of the old names.
Failed to linkify. Bug 380655 when IMAP?
Rename of Saved Search folder? Rename of real mail folder?
Rename of newly created folder? (no restart of Tb between creation and rename)
Or rename of existent folder? (create, estart of Tb, rename, rename, rename, ...)
Single rename only for a folder? Renamed a folder multiple times in a Thunderbird session?

Can you still produce your problem which you reported to comment #0?
If so, please state detailed "Steps to reproduce your problem", with mail folder structure data, with folder name data, with file name data for mail folders.
Tom,
please see comment 7.
have you stopped using thunderbird?
do you still see this problem?
